How to Store Research Peptides Correctly

Peptides are delicate molecules. How they are stored between delivery and use has a direct effect on their stability and on the reproducibility of any research that relies on them. This guide summarizes the storage principles that apply to most lyophilized research peptides.

1. Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides

In their lyophilized powder form, peptides are at their most stable. Kept dry, cold and dark, many remain stable for extended periods.

  • Short term (weeks): a refrigerator at 2–8 °C is sufficient for most peptides.
  • Long term (months and beyond): a freezer at −20 °C, or −80 °C for maximum longevity.
  • Always keep desiccated — moisture is the main enemy of a lyophilized powder. Let a cold vial reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation inside.

2. Reconstituted peptides

Once a peptide is dissolved in bacteriostatic water, the clock starts ticking. A reconstituted solution should be:

  • Stored in the refrigerator at 2–8 °C — never at room temperature for prolonged periods.
  • Protected from light (amber vials or a dark container help).
  • Used within a few weeks in most cases — the exact window depends on the specific compound.

3. Protect from light and heat

UV light and heat accelerate degradation. Store vials in their box or a dark drawer, and keep them away from windows, radiators and repeated temperature swings.

4. Minimize freeze-thaw cycles

Each freeze-thaw cycle stresses the peptide. If you plan to store a reconstituted solution long term, consider aliquoting it into smaller portions so that you only thaw what you need, leaving the rest untouched.
